About the Art-Think Design Process

So you've decided you need something designed — a logo, brochure, website or presentation, for example. Then what? Below is a rough summary of the design process for most projects. I have also tried to indicate how long each step might take for a typical logo project. Please understand, however, that every project is different. Some steps might sail quickly while others might take longer.

  1. PLANNING
Information gathering, discussion about needs objectives and problems to be solved, and establishment of design criteria. Project assumptions are generated out of this phase and detailed in a project estimate. Expected costs for the remaining phases are also detailed in the project estimate.
    2-4 hrs
  2. CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
On approval of the project estimate, the Designer will generate and present 3-6 design solutions that meet the discussed design criteria. Often color designs are developed first in black and white during this phase. The Client chooses which of the design solutions meet the needs most effectively.
    16-24 hrs
  3. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
The accepted design solution(s) are refined and developed further including typography, addition of color and refinement of illustration. In some cases, additional ideas may evolve at this point generated by either the Designer, the Client or both.
    16-32 hrs
  4. PRODUCTION
Upon final approval, the Designer will create low and high resolution, grayscale and color versions of the logo that are suitable for embroidery, print and web use. A CD will be issued to the Client containing all of these files. The Designer will produce usage guidelines and suggestions for implementation on stationery, print, web, clothing and promotional items.
    10 hrs
